Raffaele Porta was born in Naples, Italy, in 1951. He received the Pharmacy degree (summa cum laude) from the University of Naples Federico II, Naples, Italy, in 1973. Since 1991, he has been a Full Professor of biochemistry at the Department of Agriculture at the University of Naples Federico II, where he teaches enzymology. Since the academic year 2002-2003, he has been a Member of the Ph.D. Council on Biotechnological Sciences of the University of Naples Federico II. In the past, he was an Associate Professor of biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine, The Second University of Naples, Naples, Italy (1980-1989) and a Full Professor of biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Palermo, Palermo, Italy (1990-1991). Since 1990, he has been carrying out research activity at the Department of Food Science at the University of Naples Federico II. From 1973 to 1990, he carried out research activity at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics of The Second University of Naples and at the Mental Health Research Institute, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich, USA (1980-1981). Moreover, the main issues of his scientific interest involved the study of the metabolism and biological role played by polyamines and the transglutaminase-catalyzed reactions. The use of the enzyme transglutaminase both to modify peptide and protein structure and activity and to produce hydrocolloid edible films is currently the most important field of research of Porta. His scientific activity is documented by 140 articles published on journals and books having worldwide distribution and by four patents of industrial inventions. He was also the editor of several scientific texts and is currently a Member of the Editorial Board of The Open Biotechnology Journal (Bentham Science Publishers), Enzyme Research (Hindawi Publishers), and Journal of Biotechnology and Biomaterials (OMICS Publishers).
