Pradya Somboon was born in Lampang province, Thailand, in 1958. Somboon received his B.Sc. degree in Medical Technology from Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, Thailand, in 1980. In 1984, he received the M.Sc. degree in Tropical Medicine from Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. Somboon received his Ph.D. degree in Medical Entomology from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London, London, UK, in 1993. He held many positions: Lecturer (1980), Assistant Professor (1988), and Associate Professor (2002 to present). On the professional level, he participated as a Visiting Researcher at Institute of Tropical Medicine, Nagasaki University, in 1998; the Department of Medical Zoology, Faculty of Medicine, Kobe University, Kobe, Japan, in 2000; Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Agriculture, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan, in 2006; WHO Consultant on dengue and malaria, Bhutan, in 2007. His research of interest is medical entomology and vector ecology, parasitology, while current research include population genetics of Anopheles and Aedes mosquitoes, insecticide resistance mechanism of Aedes aegypti, and taxonomy of mosquitoes.
