Johanne Sundby was born in 1951. She obtained her medical doctor in 1976 and her Ph.D. degree in infertility epidemiology in 1994 from the University of Oslo. She was an Associate Professor (1996–2003) and then a Professor of global reproductive health since 2004 at the University of Oslo, Norway. Research topics of interest to her include infertility, STDs, FGM, abortion, and maternal/perinatal morbidity and mortality in developing countries, especially Botswana, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania and the Gambia, Nepal, and Europe. She is also interested in human rights, access to care, and quality of care issues in women's health. She is a policymaker on women's health nationally and internationally. She presents evaluations and advises NORAD, Sida, WHO, UNFPA, and the Research Council in Norway.
