Vincenzo Zara was born in Spongano (LE), Italy, in 1959. He received the first class honours degree in pharmacy in 1983 and the first class honours qualification in pharmacy in the same year. From 1985 to 1992, Zara worked as a Researcher in the Laboratory of Biochemistry, University of Bari (Italy). From 1992 to date, he is at the University of Salento (Lecce), where he works presently as a Professor of biochemistry. Zara served as a Visiting Researcher at the Laboratory of Biochemistry (Dr. Carl Ian Ragan), University of Southampton (UK); Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Professor J.B.C. Findlay), University of Leeds (UK); Institut für Physiologische Chemie (Professor Dr. Walter Neupert), University of Munich (Germany); Institut für Biochemie und Molekularbiologie (Professor Dr. Nikolaus Pfanner), University of Freiburg (Germany); Laboratory of Biochemistry (Professor Dr. Bernard L. Trumpower), Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, NH, USA. He is mainly interested in mitochondrial bioenergetics, biogenesis of mitochondrial carrier proteins, assembly and function of the mitochondrial respiratory complexes, metabolite transport across biological membranes, sperm mitochondria bioenergetics, and hepatic de novo lipogenesis. He works as a Reviewer for several international scientific journals in the field of biochemistry and molecular and cellular biology.
