Fernando Schmitt was Professor of Pathology at the University of Porto (2004–2013), Portugal, and then University of Toronto (2013-2014), Canada. He was born in Brazil in 1959 and received his Medical degree in 1983. Fernando served his pathology residency at the Medical Faculty of São Paulo, followed by a fellowship in clinical cytology at the Karolinska Hospital, Stockholm, and he gained his Ph.D. in pathology in 1990. In Portugal, he established a research group in breast pathology and a FNA service at IPATIMUP. Dr. Schmitt holds 12 national and international society memberships, including the FIAC. Dr. Schmitt has authored more than 393 papers in peer-review journals and 23 book chapters. He serves as Associate Editor of Diagnostic Cytopathology, Acta Cytologica, BMC Cancer, and PlosOne and serves on the Editorial Board for a number of journals. Dr. Schmitt has served on various national and international committees of pathology and cytology societies. He is the Secretary-General of the International Academy of Cytology. Dr. Schmitt organized the 35th European Congress of Cytology in Lisbon in September 2009. He was awarded the Educator of the Year 2011 by the Papanicoloau Society of Cytology (USA) and received the 2013 Maurice Goldblatt Cytology Award from the International Academy of Cytology. Teaching medical students, research in breast pathology, and performing and diagnosing FNA biopsies are his favorite activities. In September 2014 Fernando assumed the position of Director of the Department of Pathology and Medicine at Laboratoire National de Sante in Luxembourg.
