Norman Birge was born in Berkeley, California in 1957. He received his Bachelor’s degree in physics from Harvard University in 1979, then his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1986. After 2 years as a post-doctoral member of technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories, he joined the faculty of Michigan State University, where he is now a Professor. He has enjoyed two sabbatical years working in the Groupe Quantronique at Saclay, France, first in 1995-96, then in 2003-04. His research is in the general area of quantum transport and mesoscopic physics, with a recent emphasis on the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
