Cynthia Owsley

Cynthia Owsley is a Professor and Director of the Clinical Research Unit in the Department of Ophthalmology, School of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham. She holds the Nathan E. Miles Chair of Ophthalmology. Dr. Owsley received her Ph.D. degree from the Cornell University in experimental psychology, followed by a postdoctoral training at Northwestern University in vision and aging and at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s School of Public Health in epidemiology. Her research program is focused on aging-related eye disease and vision impairment and makes use of a variety of research techniques, including psychophysics, epidemiology, clinical trials, and health services research methodologies. Areas of her current interest include optical and neural mechanisms underlying aging-related vision impairment, risk factors for age-related macular degeneration, the relationship between vision impairment and task performance (particularly driving), community interventions to improve the rate of annual dilated comprehensive eye care among older under-served populations, and the design of clinical trials to measure the effectiveness of low vision rehabilitation. Her research program is funded by a number of organizations including the National Institutes of Health, Research to Prevent Blindness, the EyeSight Foundation of Alabama, Prevent Blindness America, private philanthropy, and industry.
