Charles A. Cefalu

Charles A. Cefalu is a recipient of the M.D. and M.S. degrees. Dr. Cefalu is a Professor and the Chief of the Section of Geriatric Medicine at the Department of Medicine at LSUHSC, La, USA and currently is the Program Director of the LSU Geriatric Medicine Fellowship as of March 2005 and Chief of the Section of Geriatric Medicine, the Department of Medicine at LSUHSC. He was appointed as Codirector of the Center on Aging at the LSU Health Science Center in May 2006. He currently supervises LSU medical students and internal medicine and family medicine residents in the nursing home setting. Dr. Cefalu serves as Chair of the Clinical Practice Committee, the Clinical Practice Guideline Committee of the American Medical Directors Association (National Nursing Home Clinical Practice Committee) and Public Policy Committee of the American Geriatrics Society. He was recently elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the American Geriatrics Society in April 2010 for a 3-year term. He also serves on the nursing home initiative of the LA Healthcare Review, the organization that oversees quality improvement by Medicare (CMS) for Louisiana nursing homes. In 2007, he was honored for being the Advisory Board Member of the year. Dr. Cefalu works as Medical Director of three LSU-affiliated New Orleans Metro area nursing homes. Dr. Cefalu is the author of numerous regional, national, and international publications relative to Geriatric Medicine and has spoken at various local, regional, and national geriatric conferences. For one and one-half years, Dr. Cefalu has been the principal investigator of a Phase-III clinical trial of an investigational medication to treat osteoporosis in 2004-05; LSU was one of 100 sites that participated internationally in this clinical trial. He also recently occupied the position of principal investigator of an observational study of chronic anemia in LTC residents and is currently involved in research regarding fall risk assessment/osteoporosis in the nursing home.
