Salvatore Battaglia
0000-0002-2867-917XDoctor Salvatore Battaglia was born in Palermo (Italy) on January 2sd, 1974. He graduated MD cum laude in 1998 at Palermo University, School of Medicine. He performed his residency programme in Respiratory Medicine at the same University (1999-2002). He spent a training period of 15 months (2001-2002) at the Department of Pulmonology, Leiden University Medical Centre, Leiden, The Netherlands. During this period he worked on inflammation and oxidative stress in asthma and in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and he was supervised by prof. P.J. Sterk, P.S. Hiemstra e K.F. Rabe. His research collaboration with the Department of Pulmonology of Leiden is ongoing. In the 2006 he graduated PhD in “Fisiopatologia Respiratoria Sperimentale” (experimental respiratory pathophysiology) at Parma University and he defended his Thesis on “local and systemic inflammation and oxidative stress in obstructive lung diseases”. His present position is “Ricercatore Universitario” (Assistant Professor) of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Palermo. His research activity is focused on asthma and COPD in the fields of small airways, systemic aspects of COPD, oxidative stress, non-invasive techniques, health related quality of life and chronic obstruction in elderly patients. The results of these studies have been published on international peer-review journals. His h-index is 10 as calculated by Scopus. He carries out his clinical activity in the Department of Pulmonology of the University of Palermo (c/o “V. Cervello” hospital). He teaches Respiratory Medicine at the schools of Medicine and of Nursing of the University of Palermo. He is active member of the European Respiratory Society (ERS), of the Italian Societies of Respiratory Medicine (SIMER), and of the Italian Societies of Geriatric Respiratory Medicine (SIMREG).
