Russell Hughes

Russell Hughes was born in Denbigh, Wales, in 1946, Russ Hughes. He received his undergraduate education at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology in England, and his Ph.D. degree at the University of Toronto, Canada, under the guidance of John Powell. After postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Bristol, England (with Michael Green), and McGill University, Montréal, Canada (with John Harrod), he joined the Chemistry Department at Dartmouth College, where he is now Frank R. Mori Professor of Chemistry. His research activities focus on organometallic synthesis and reactivity, mechanisms of metal-promoted carbon-carbon cleavage and formation reactions, catalytic reactions of unsaturated and strained molecules, coordination stabilization of reactive organic species, fluxional behavior of organometallic molecules, perfluorinated analogues of hydrocarbon organometallics, and transition metal promoted fluorocarbon chemistry. In 1990, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science by the University of Manchester, England, for his research accomplishments. He is, or has been, a Fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundations, a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Organometallics and the Journal of Fluorine Chemistry, and is coauthor of about 170 research publications in organometallic chemistry. He is also a member of the Inorganic, Organic, and Fluorine Divisions of the American Chemical Society, and has served as Chairman of the Organometallic Subdivision of the American Chemical Society, on the Executive Committee of the Fluorine Division of the American Chemical Society, and as Chairman of the Organometallic Gordon Research Conference. In addition he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) and a Chartered Chemist, UK.
