Halil Ibrahim Atabay

Halil Ibrahim Atabay was born in Giresun, Turkey, in 1969. He was graduated from the Veterinary Faculty of Istanbul University, Istanbul, Turkey, in 1992, and completed his Ph.D. degree study at the Department of Clinical Veterinary Sciences at the Bristol University, England, UK, in 1998. After that, he was appointed and worked as a faculty member at various levels, as Assistant Professor, and as Associate Professor at the Department of Microbiology, Veterinary Faculty, University of Kafkas, kars, Turkey, between 1998 and 2007. Currently, Atabay has two appointments as Microbiology Professor at the Department of Medical Microbiology, the Faculty of Medicine, the SIFA University, Washington, DC, USA, and the Department of Food Engineering, the Izmir Institute of Technology, Izmir, Turkey, respectively. He also worked as Senior Research Scientist at the Department of Poultry, Fish and Fur Animals at the Danish Veterinary Institution, Arhus, Denmark, for eleven months between 2001-2002. He received the FEMS-Fellowship in 1996. His main research field covers isolation, identification, subtyping, and detection of pathogenic bacteria with particular reference to Campylobacter, Arcobacter, and Helicobacter spp. using conventional and molecular approaches such as PCR, real-time PCR, PFGE, and RAPD profiling.
