Akio Hiura received a Ph.D. degree in medical science from Fukushima Medical College in 1982. He worked as an Assistant at the Department of Anatomy (Gross Anatomy), Fukushima Medical College (1976–1982). Hiura currently serves as an Associate Professor at the Department of Oral Anatomy, School of Dentistry, University of Tokushima. His expertise areas include neuroanatomy, effects of capsaicin on the primary sensory (nociceptive) neurons, pharmacology of capsaicin, synaptic structure between central terminals of the primary sensory neurons and inhibitory interneuron in the substantia gelatinosa, and TRPV1- and IB4-positive nerve fiber innervation on the rat cornea.
