Jorge H. Leitão

Instituto Superior Técnico, Portugal

Jorge Leitão serves as an Assistant Professor of the biological sciences scientific and pedagogical area at the Department of Bioengineering, Instituto Superior Técnico (Technical University of Lisbon), Portugal. He received his Ph.D. degree in biotechnology in 1996 from the Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. During his Ph.D., he studied the role of the environmental factors in the biosynthesis of alginate by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. His major research interest has been the molecular biology of exopolysaccharide biosynthesis by Gram-negative bacteria. His current research is primarily focused on the biology and genetics of bacteria of the Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc), on the discovery and characterization of small noncoding regulatory RNAs in these bacteria, and on the application of molecular biology methods to environmental microbiology.
