Zrinka Kovarik was born on April 17, 1971 in Bjelovar, Croatia. From 1989 to 1994, she studied biochemical engineering at the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology, University of Zagreb. Since 1995, she has worked at the Institute for Medical Research and Occupational Health, Zagreb, focusing on interactions between cholinesterases and various substrates and inhibitors. In 1997, she received an M.S. degree in biochemistry and in 2002 a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry at the University of Zagreb. She spent almost two years as predoctoral and postdoctoral fellow and at the Department of Pharmacology, School of Medicine, University of California at San Diego, Calif, USA. Her professional fields are biochemistry, toxicology, enzyme kinetics, reactions of cholinesterases with various substrates and inhibitors, and antidotes for treatment of organophosphorus poisoning.
