Hugo Van Bever
Hugo Van Bever completed his medical studies at the State University of Ghent, Belgium (1971–1978) and achieved his training in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital, State University of Ghent, Belgium, from 1978 to 1983. Following that, he became a Resident in paediatric allergy and pulmonology at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, from 1984 to 1993, an Associate Professor in paediatric allergy and pulmonology at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, from 1993 to 1997, and a Professor in paediatric allergy and pulmonology at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, starting from 1997. From 1997 to 2001, Bever was also the Head of the Department of Paediatrics, University of Antwerp, Belgium. In addition, he joined the National University of Singapore as a Professor and a Senior Consultant in paediatric allergy and immunology at the Department of Paediatrics, in June 2002. He has published more than 250 papers in the national and international journals. His main research interest areas are pediatric allergy and pediatric respiratory infections. These include atopic diseases in infancy and prediction of atopic diseases in newborns (i.e., study of cord blood cells), inhaled corticosteroids and growth in childhood asthma, mechanisms of immunotherapy in childhood asthma (i.e., influence on bronchial inflammation and cytokine profiles), allergic reactions and food allergy in atopic dermatitis, lung function testing in preschool children, epidemiology of atopy and asthma, and skin barrier defects in atopic dermatitis. In the area of respiratory infections, his main interests are on viral bronchiolitis, relationship between viral infections and allergy, viral-induced ARDS, and epidemiology of respiratory infections.
