Faming Zhang received his Ph.D. degree in materials science from Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China, in 2005. Then he worked for two years at Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (2005-2007). Since December 2007, he has been working in physics of new materials at the Institute of Physics, University of Rostock, Rostock, Germany, as a Faculty Staff and Research Scientist. Since September 2013, he was awarded the Habilitation title from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technology, University of Rostock. His research fields are nanomaterials (nanocarbons and nanocomposites); biomaterials (bone and teeth repair materials and porous cellular solids); field-assisted processing techniques and theory (spark plasma sintering and selected electron beam melting); structural stability and phase transformation by synchrotron X-rays; industrial, biomedical, environmental, and sustainable development applications. His recent research is financially supported by 3 DFG (German Research Foundation) and DESY Hamburg projects. He is the author of 4 book chapters, 40 journal peer-reviewed journal publications, 31 conference publications, and 6 patents.
