Suresh P. Benjamin is primarily interested in the life history of spiders and other arachnids. He graduated from the University of Basel, Basel, Switzerland, with a Ph.D. degree in 2003. Thereafter, Benjamin undertook four years of postdoctoral work in USA. He currently works at the Institute of Fundamental Studies in his hometown, Sri Lanka, where he is at the moment the Head of the Department of Ecology and Environmental Biology. The aim of his Ph.D. research was to study in detail the web and the web construction behavior of the families Linyphiidae and Theridiidae that construct cobwebs and sheet webs and are descendants of orb-web-building ancestors. Benjamin's thesis resulted in the first ever comprehensive description of the construction behavior of these spiders and has now opened a whole new field in arachnology. Benjamin is also interested in native orchids of Sri Lanka.
