Valeria Bachiocco was born in Chiaravalle, Italy in 1948. She obtained the degree in medicine and surgery and the specialization in anesthesia and reanimation from the University of Bologna in 1972 and 1978, respectively. In 1989, she specialised in psychology at the University of Siena. From 1977 to 2009, she was Assistant and then Associate in the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation of the S Orsola Hospital (University of Bologna) working in the vascular and thoracic surgery in liver and kidney transplantation, in pediatric surgery and in the intensive care unit for newborn and children. In 1977, she served as Part-Time Professor in psychophysiology of pain at the University of Siena and from 2000 to 2008 at the University of Bologna. Since 2008, she is Part-Time Professor in physiology at the University of Siena. She cooperated in several international projects for the study of pain with teams of the University of Siena (G. Carli, Ph.D.degree ; A. M. Aloisi, Ph.D. degree), Milano (M. Tiengo, Ph.D. degree), North Caroline (T. Toomey, Ph.D. degree), and of the Columbia University (W. C. Clark, Ph.D. degree). She attended several national and international conferences and spent some periods at the Toronto General Hospital, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and Children Hospital in Philadelphia. She is IASP Member.
