Fumihiro Ashida was born in Tsuyama, Japan, in 1957. He graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Shizuoka University, Shizuoka, Japan, in 1979 and received an M.S. degree in engineering from the same university in 1981. He obtained a Ph.D. in engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan, in 1993. He served as a Research Associate at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tsuyama National College of Technology, Tsuyama, Japan, in 1981, and was promoted to Lecturer at the department in 1987 and an Associate Professor at the Department of Electronics and Control Engineering in 1994. He was transferred to the Department of Electronic Control Systems Engineering at Shimane University, Shimane, Japan, and promoted to Full Professor in 1999. His main research interests are in mathematical analyses of direct thermoelastic problems, inverse thermoelastic problems, and piezothermoelastic problems as well as in their applications to smart structures for control of thermal displacement or stresses. He has served as a Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Thermal Stresses since 2004. He organized the First Asian Conference of Mechanics on Functional Materials and Structures in Matsue, Japan, in 2008. He is a Full Professor at the Department of Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronic Engineering at Shimane University after the reorganization in 2012.
