Polrat Wilairatana was born in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1960. He received the M.D. and the Ph.D. (tropical medicine) degrees from Mahidol University (MU), Thailand, in 1984 and 2000, respectively. Since 1991, Wilairatana is with the Department of Clinical Tropical Medicine, Faculty of Tropical Medicine, MU. He had been the Director of Hospital for Tropical Diseases, MU, during 1996–2004 and has been the Head of WHO Collaborating Centre for Clinical Management of Malaria since 2006. Presently, he is a Professor of internal medicine. He is mainly interested in clinical management of uncomplicated and severe malaria and clinical new antimalarial drug trials.
