Alexander MacKenzie received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in medical biophysics from the University of Toronto and his pediatric certification in 1989 from the University of Ottawa. He is a Member of the attending staff at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa and maintains a cross appointment with the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Ottawa. He recently stepped down from the positions of CEO and Scientific Director at Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute, and he served in 2003 and 2004 as Vice President of Research. He works on the molecular genetics of pediatric disease with current research focus on the molecular genetics of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).
