David A. Gewirtz

David A. Gewirtz received his Ph.D. degree in biomedical sciences (physiology) from the City University of New York in 1978 and is currently a Professor of pharmacology at the Virginia Commonwealth University and a Member of the Massey Cancer Center. His work is focused on experimental chemotherapy and radiotherapy of breast cancer with a focus on developing nontoxic approaches for chemosensitization and radiosensitization. A number of previous publications have proposed the use of vitamin D and vitamin D analogs for these purposes. Recent work has also emphasized the involvement of autophagy and senescence in the response of tumor cells to chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
