Nekane Guarrotxena was born in Bilbao, Spain, in 1966. She received her Ph.D. degree in chemistry from Complutense University of Madrid, Madrid, Spain in 1994. In 1994-1995, she was awarded an EU Fellowship at the École Nationale Supérieure d´Arts et Métiers in Paris, France. In 1995-1996, she was a Research Fellow at University Montpellier 2, Montpellier, France. From 1996 to 1999, she was a Research Associate of the CSIC at Institute of Polymer Science and Technology (ICTP). Presently, she is a Tenured Scientist at ICTP-CSIC. From 2001 to 2005, she was a Member of Scientific Board of Master of Polymers and FOCITEC Member at ICTP-CSIC. From 2008 to 2011, she worked as visiting Professor at Center for Polymer and Organic Solids (CPOS), University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). Her research interests focus on (1) influence of molecular microstructure on chemical (nucleophilic substitution and oxidative and nonoxidation degradation mechanisms) and physical (thermal, mechanodynamical, dielectrical, and electrical) properties of polymer materials and (2) the design and preparation of nanomaterials and their applications in sensors taking the advantage of SERS sensitivity and in medical and biotechnological applications. She serves as an Editorial Board Member of Polymer Research Journal.
