Jan Sladek is presently Head of the Mechanics Deptartment, Institute of Construction and Architecture, Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS), Slovakia, http://nic.savba.sk/sav/ustarch/Mech/sladek.html. Sladek's main research fields are computational methods in solid mechanics, boundary element method (BEM), meshless methods, numerical methods in fracture mechanics, fracture mechanics in composite materials, and modeling of smart structures. He is a Member of the Scientific Committee for Mechanics since 1990, and a General Secretary since 1995. He is also a Member of Committee for Scientific Degrees at Ministry of Education of Slovakia 1993–2006 and a Member of Governmental Committee for Evaluation of Slovak Universities. Sladek is a Member of the editorial boards for the Computational and Applied Mechanics Journal, the Electronic Journal of Boundary Elements, Journal of Mechanical Engineering, SDHM-Structural Durability and Health Monitoring Journal, International Journal of Applied Mechanics, the Series on Damage and Fracture Mechanics, and Journal of Multiscale Modelling (JMM). He is also and Associate Editor for CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences.
