David R. Gretch, MD, PhD is Associate Professor in the Departments of Laboratory Medicine and Medicine, and Director of the Viral Hepatitis Laboratory at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Gretch received his MD degree and PhD degree in Microbiology at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. His primary focus is the hepatitis C virus, and he has also contributed to avain myeloblastosis virus, human cytomegalovirus, and human immunodeficiency virus research, Dr. Gretch has served on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Virology and the World Journal of Gastroenterology, and as a peer reviewer for numerous scientific and medical journals. He is a standing member on the NIH Clinical Research and Field Studies in Infectious Diseases study section, and has served as an ad hoc reviewer for numerous other NIH and non-NIH study sections. Areas of expertise include hepatitis C virus diagnostic testing, viral genomics and kinetics, and molecular pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis C. He is the Principle Investigator for two large human cohort studies on hepatitis C sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Gretch is also a Member of the Steering Committee and Director of the Virology Laboratory for the NIH HALT-C Trial.
