Roland Bender received the Diploma degree in biology from the University of Freiburg, Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany (1986–1991), and the Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Anatomy at the same university (1992–1995) (Mentor: Professor Michael Frotscher). In the period from 1995 to 1999, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Anatomy, University of Freiburg, and from 1999 to 2003 at the Department of Pediatrics, University of California, Irvine (UCI), CA, USA (Mentor: Professor Tallie Z. Baram). Bender became Assistant Researcher at the Department of Pediatrics, UCI (2003–2006). Since October 2006, he has been Assistant Professor at the Institute of Neuroanatomy, University of Hamburg, in Hamburg, Germany. His areas of expertise include hippocampal anatomy, hippocampal development, and developmental disorders. He received the Young Investigator Award from the American Epilepsy Society (2000) and a Scholarship of the Epilepsy Foundation of America (2001-2002).
