A. Mantalaris is a Reader directing the Biological Systems Engineering Laboratory (BSEL) in the Centre for Process Systems Engineering at the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London. His research interests are in bioprocess/tissue engineering focusing on applied stem cell bioprocessing. AM has developed novel 3-D bioreactors and novel bioprocesses that integrate embryonic stem cell culture. AM has over 60 publications in journals, 10 book chapters and holds three US patents with a further 5 pending, including one on embryonic stem cell bioprocessing. In 2008 he co-edited a book titled “Advances in Tissue Engineering” with Julia Polak and Sian Harding. BSEL has won the best student poster award at Tissue Engineering Society International in Florida in 2003, the Junior Moulton Award by the IChemE for best paper in 2004, and the Young Investigator Award at the 7th International Conference on Cellular Engineering in Seoul in 2005, and the Rector’s Research Excellence Award in 2006, and the Live Demo Award at ISCAS for the “Intelligent Stem Cell Culture Systems” project. AM is on the Editorial Board of Tissue Engineering, a member of the MRC Stem cell User Liaison Committee and teaches at the Rice University summer course on “Advances in Tissue Engineering).
