Håkan Mellstedt is an M.D. and a Ph.D. degrees holder. He is a professor of oncologic biotherapy at the Karolinska Institutet, Solna, Sweden, and Cancer Centre Karolinska (CCK), Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden (1999-). He is board certified in internal medicine, hematology, and oncology. He was a Professor of experimental oncology at Uppsala University (1996-1999), Administrative Director of Cancer Center Karolinska 1999-2010, Senior Consultant at the Department of Oncology, Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm (1980-2011), and Senior Consultant at Sophiahemmet Hospital, Stockholm (1980- ). He was also the President of ESMO (2004–2009), Chair of the Swedish Medical Society of Oncology (1993-2000), Member of the Scientific Committee of the Swedish Cancer Foundation (1987-2000), Chair of the Swedish Childhood Cancer Foundation, and Member of the Accreditation Council of Oncology in Europe (ACOE) (2009-). He is also the Cofounder of a biotech company named KANCERA AB, (2011). Professor Mellstedt was awarded the Alfaferone Prize in 1989 and the Jan Waldenström Award (USA) 2001. Professor Mellstedt´s main areas of research include tumor immunology and immunotherapy, with a focus on cancer vaccines and antibody treatment. He has implemented a program developing targeted therapy using small molecules for the treatment of lymphoproliferative diseases. Professor Mellstedt has published about 500 manuscripts and is the author of numerous oncology chapters in professional medical textbooks. He holds several patents.
