S. Hesse serves as a board-certified neurologist and physician in physical medicine and rehabilitation, serves currently as the Medical Director of the Rehabilitation Clinic Medical Park Berlin Humboldtmühle, Berlin, and holds a full professorship at the Charité: University Medicine Berlin in Neurorehabilitation. He studied medicine in Freiburg and Ménchen, Germany, and he was a Research Assistant at the Department of Neurology at the TU München (Director: Prof. A. Struppler) and a Consultant in neurological rehabilitation at Klinik Berlin, Department Neurological Rehabilitation, Charité (director Prof. Dr. KH Mauritz). He had obtained the M.D. degree in experimental cardiology, 1988, and the venia legendi in PMR at the Charité in 1996. He has published extensively in the area of motor rehabilitation after CNS lesion. His main research interests are the gait rehabilitation by treadmill training with BWS, the design and evaluation of robots to intensify the upper and lower limb rehabilitation (Gait Trainer GT I, Haptic Walker, G-EO, Bi-Manu-Track, Reha-Slide, Reha-Digit), the neurolytic treatment of spasticity, and the brain stimulation to promote brain plasticity. He shows currently an activity in clinical trials for stroke rehabilitation.
