Erdman B. Palmore

Erdman B. Palmore is a Professor Emeritus of medical sociology at the Duke University Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development. He was born in Japan of missionary parents in 1930 but grew up in Virginia. He received a B.A. degree from Duke University, NC, USA, in 1952; an M.A. degree from the University of Chicago, Ill, USA, in 1954; and a Ph.D. degree from Columbia University, NY, USA, in 1959, all in sociology. He was an Assistant Professor of sociology at Yale from 1960 to 1963. Since then he has been a Professor of medical sociology at Duke University. He has written or edited twenty books including the Normal Aging series, the Handbook on the Aged in the U.S., Facts on Aging Quiz, Ageism, Encyclopedia of Ageism, and the International Handbook on Aging. He has also published 118 book chapters or articles in professional journals. He is a Past President of the Southern Gerontological Society and a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America.
