Yraima Cordeiro serves as an Associate Professor at the Pharmacy School, in the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil, since 2006. She received her M.S. degree in biological chemistry in 2001 from the Medical Biochemistry Institute, UFRJ and her Ph.D. degree in biological chemistry from the same institution in 2005. Since 2005, she is Member of the Brazilian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SBBq). In 2006, she was awarded with a prize from L´Oréal Program For Women in Science, L´Oréal/ UNESCO/Brazilian Academy of Sciences. In 2010, she was elected as a TWAS (The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World) affiliated member, for a five-year period. In 2012, she was elected affiliated member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, also for a five-year period. Her current research interests are the investigation of prion protein interaction with biological macromolecules, such as nucleic acids and its implications in prion diseases, and screening of organic compounds that prevent aggregation and conversion of prion protein into toxic species.
