Kun Hwang was born on December 12, 1957, in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Hwang received the M.D. degree from the College of Medicine (1977–1983), the M.S. degree from the Graduate School (1987-1988), and the Ph.D. degree from the Graduate School (1989–1991), all from Seoul National University, Seoul, Republic of Korea. Hwang served as a Public Physician from 1983 to 1985, completed the Residency of plastic surgery at the Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul, Republic of Korea, from 1987 to 1990, and joined the Korean Board of Plastic Surgery, in 1991. Hwang currently works as a Professor of plastic surgery at the College of Medicine, Inha University, Incheon, Republic of Korea, since 1992, and was a Visiting Scholar at the Oregon Health Science University, Portland, OR, USA, from 1997 to 1998. His fields of specialization include plastic surgery, maxillofacial surgery, surgical anatomy, and physical anthropology. Hwang is an Active Member of the Korean Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Korean Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, the Korean Society of Anatomist, and the Korean Society of Physical Anthropologists.
