Barak Herut received his Ph.D. degree in 1992 (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel) and was promoted to a Senior Scientist (grade A+, full professor) in 2003. He was appointed as the Head of the Marine Chemistry Department between 1996 and 1998 and 2000–2005 and as the Director General of the Israel Oceanographic & Limnological Research in 2005. In 1998-1999, he has been a Visiting Professor at the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences, Oregon State University (Corvallis, OR, USA), and since 2008, he has been affiliated as a Full Professor at the University of Haifa, Israel. Herut has published 87 refereed journal articles and book chapters, 30 conference proceedings, and approximately 140 abstracts and 170 reports. His main interests concern the levels, distribution, and sources of trace elements and nutrients in the SE Mediterranean (especially along the Israeli coastline) and in atmospheric precipitates. He is coordinating Israel's National Monitoring Program of trace metals and nutrients along the Mediterranean coast. He has worked on several geochemical studies in the SE Mediterranean and the Dead Sea.
