P. B. Kirti obtained his Ph.D. degree from the Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, India, in 1979. He joined the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in 1978 and has been associated with the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, primarily working at the National Research Centre for Plant Biotechnology till December 1998. He has joined the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Hyderabad, India, as a Professor in January 1999 and headed it from February 2004 to February 2007. He has worked as a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the University of Gottingen (1985–1987), as a Visiting FAO Fellow at the Ohio State Biotechnology Center, Columbus, USA (1993). He was a Visiting Principal Fellow at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He has been an Elected Member of the Plant Tissue Culture and Biotechnology Association of India, Fellow of the Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences, Hyderabad, Fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi, India, and Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad, India.
