José Paula serves as an Associate Professor at the University of Lisbon, responsible for the B.S. curricula in marine biology, and the courses in marine ecology (B.S.), coastal systems (M.S.), and tropical marine biology (M.S.). He belongs to the research team of the Oceanography Centre of the Faculty of Sciences of University of Lisbon. He authored over 70 scientific papers in refereed international journals and is experienced in coordinating research projects both in Europe and East Africa. The main research expertise and interests are coastal and marine ecology and biodiversity, marine conservation, and a strong particular interest in the tropical environments, in particular Africa. The specific expertise is within invertebrate development (in particular dispersal mechanisms, recruitment and gene fluxes, and population structuring), mangrove, seagrass and rocky shore environments (ecology, biodiversity, functioning), and marine conservation.
