Vladimir Georgiev was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1956. He was awarded the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1974, in Berlin. He received an M.S. degree in mathematics from the University of Sofia in 1981, and two Ph.D. degrees in 1983 and 1987 from the Institute of Mathematics, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. He has been an Assistant Professor at the Institute for Foreign Students in Sofia, from 1981 to 1987, and a Researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences from 1987 to 1991. Dr. Georgiev has also been a Senior Researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences from 1991 to 1994, and Senior Researcher I (Full Professor) at the Institute of Mathematics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences from 1994 to 1997. He was a Full Professor at the University of L'Aquila from 1997 to 2000, and has been a Full Professor at the University of Pisa since 2000.
