Tomoko Hayashi received her medical degree and Ph.D. degree at the Hyogo College of Medicine, Hyogo, Japan. She taught microbiology and virology at the medical school for 8 years and subsequently relocated to the United States in order to take advantage of advanced training opportunities. Hayashi completed postdoctoral training in pulmonary infection of tuberculosis at the University of California San Diego, San Diego, Calif, USA, in 1997 and continued his research with a primary focus on immunology, specifically in the areas of inflammation and infectious diseases. She is mostly interested in the roles of innate immune responses, namely, Toll-like receptor signaling pathways, and in autoimmune inflammatory diseases. In 2005, she was fortunate to be able to join the research group aiming toward the translational drug development in the academic setting. She has knowledge and experience in basic research and translational development.
