Gianfranco Piccirillo was born on March 13, 1961. He received his degree in medicine and surgery (cum laude) and his Postgraduate Specialist Diploma in cardiology from University of Rome "La Sapienza" in 1986 and 1992, respectively. In 2008, he received his Ph.D. degree from Krannert Institute of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, Ind, USA. In 2005, Piccirillo was appointed as a Professor of geriatric medicine at the Department of Ageing and Geriatric Medicine, University of Rome, ''La Sapienza''. Since 1994, he has been in charge of the Autonomic Nervous System Unit at the same department. Since 1990, he has concentrated his research interests on neuroautonomic cardiovascular control and cardiac repolarization (QT variability index in different pathological conditions including neuro-mediated syncope, heart failure, arterial hypertension, and myocardial infarction sudden cardiac death). For this reason, he developed a software programme for computer-assisted recording of oscillations in heart rate and arterial pressure that analyzes the data in various power spectra and calculates baroreflex sensitivity using the classic technique (phenylephrine) or cross-spectral analysis. Dr. Piccirillo's scientific activity from 1987 until today comprises 314 papers, of these 75 have been published in journals with an impact factor (year 2009) yielding a total of 244. He has also been speaker or cospeaker at over 200 national and international symposiums and congresses.
