Debapratim Kar Chowdhuri

Debapratim Kar Chowdhuri currently holds the position of Senior Principal Scientist and the Head of Embryotoxicology Laboratory, at CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR) Lucknow, India, and he obtained his B.S degree (with honors) in 1979 and the M.S. degree in zoology (1981) from Burdwan University, the Ph.D. degree from Banaras Hindu University (1990) and did postdoctoral studies (1990-1991) from IISC, Bangalore, India. After joining the institute in November 1991 as a Scientist C, he developed Drosophila as an alternate model and used transgenesis to examine the cellular toxicity of environmental chemicals and proposed hsp70 expression as a first tier indicator of cellular toxicity against exposure/effect. Another area of research being pursued is DNA damage and response. He has published 50 papers in many journals that include top ten publications in the field. He was awarded National Merit Scholarship (1976, 1979-1981), CSIR-Senior Research Scholarship, (1988-1990), and DBT National Research Associateship (1990-1992), Government of India, and International Major Research Project Award from British Council (2007-2011). His areas of expertise are molecular toxicology and genetic toxicology.
