Mika Jormakka graduated in Molecular Biology at the Stockholm University in 2000 and received his Ph.D. degree in biochemistry at the Imperial College London in 2004. During his Ph.D. candidature, he focused on structural studies of membrane bound respiratory complexes. Jormakka was subsequently awarded the EMBO fellowship (2004), which enabled him to relocate to the University of New South Wales, Sydney, NSW, Australia. There he continued his work on respiratory complexes, while at the same time shifting focus to structure-function studies of membrane transporters. In 2006 he was awarded an Australian postdoctoral fellowship, and in 2007 he accepted a Research Program Head position at the Centenary Institute, Sydney, NSW, Australia, where he has set up a structural biology laboratory working on structure-function studies of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic membrane proteins.
