Adrian Williams was appointed as the Chair in Pharmaceutics at the new School of Pharmacy, University of Reading, in October 2004 and is currently the Head of the department. Previously, he held a personal chair in Biophysical Pharmaceutics at the University of Bradford where he had been since 1990. He has a longstanding interest in transdermal and topical drug delivery, from fundamental studies on the barrier nature of the tissue to formulation approaches for increasing drug delivery, including vesicular carriers, penetration enhancers, and supersaturation. In addition, his research group investigates other novel formulation strategies for mucoadhesion, nonviral gene delivery, and improving the delivery of poorly water soluble compounds. To date, he has supervised over 30 Ph.D. students and postdoctoral research fellows and published over 100 research and review articles in addition to authoring a book on Transdermal and Topical Drug Delivery (Pharmaceutical Press). Professor Williams also sits on external advisory boards for the pharmaceutical industry and is a Member of the Editorial Boards for the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology.
