Jirí Vencovský received his M.D. degree from the Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic (Czechoslovakia). He completed his specializations in internal medicine, rheumatology, and medical immunology while working in the Institute of Rheumatology in Prague. Since 1993, he is the Head of the Research and Clinical Laboratory Departments of the Institute. He has become an Associate Professor at Charles University in 1996 and a Full Professor in 2002. In the years 1988, 1991, and 1992-1993, he was a visiting scientist at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology in London, where he worked under supervision of Professor R. N. Maini. Professor Vencovský has been serving as a Scientific Secretary of the Czech Society for Rheumatology since 2001 and has been an Editor of the Czech Rheumatology journal since 1998. He is a Member of the Editorial Boards of several scientific journals including Annals of Rheumatic Diseases and Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology. Durig 2002–2005, he was a Member of the Scientific Committee of EULAR and the Chairman of the Abstract Committee for the European Congress of Rheumatology (2003-2004). Since 2002, he has been an International Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology. He has received several prizes for the best publication or book in the Czech Republic. His research interests include autoantibodies in rheumatic diseases and inflammatory idiopathic myopathies. He published around 150 scientific papers, reviews, and book chapters and was several times a Speaker and an Invited Speaker for the EULAR Congress and a Speaker at ACR Annual Meeting.
