Ana B. Abecasis
Ana B. Abecasis joined the Virology Laboratory, Hospital de Egas Moniz in Lisbon, Portugal, where she started doing some research work, together with routine lab work. From 2003 to 2004, she followed the Postgraduate Programme in Bioinformatics (PGBioInf) organized by the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon and Instituto Gulbenkian Ciência in Portugal. Between 2004 and 2009, Abecasis did research work on molecular epidemiology of HIV-1 for her doctorate studies in the Laboratory for Clinical and Epidemiology Virology at the REGA Institute for Medical Research, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Leuven, Belgium. Since 2009, she has been holding a Ph.D. degree in medical sciences from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. In January 2010, Abecasis joined the Center for Malaria and Other Tropical Diseases (CMDT) and Institute for Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT) in Lisbon as a Postdoc Fellow. Her research work mostly focused on molecular epidemiology and drug resistance of HIV-1. Abecasis is involved in several European networks for the study of HIV-1 drug resistance and has published more than 20 papers in international journals and presented around 50 abstracts in international conferences, many of them as oral presentation. Since 2005, Abecasis has been teaching yearly at the International Bioinformatics Workshop on Virus Evolution and Molecular Epidemiology and coorganized the edition of 2007 in Lisbon and of 2011 in BelÉm do Pará.
