Hongwei Zhu was born in Liaoning, China, in 1974. He received his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at the Tsinghua University, Beijing, China in 1998. He finished his doctoral studies in material processing engineering under the direction of Professor Dehai Wu. After completing his postdoctoral researches in Japan (2003-2004) and USA (2004-2008), he began his independent career as a Faculty Member at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Tsinghua University, where he is currently a Professor of materials science and engineering. He has received several awards including the National Natural Science Award (2nd class)(2006), the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award (2005), and the New Century Excellent Talents in University Award (2008). Zhu has received 4 CN patents/1 US patent and published more than 80 papers in refereed international journals including Science, Nano Letters, Advanced Materials, and Applied Physics Letters (cited over 1000 times by others during the past 5 years). His current research involves synthesis, characterization, and energy/environmental applications of macroscopic structures of nanomaterials (e.g., carbon nanotubes and graphene).
