Shao-Yu Chen is a Ph.D. degree holder and a Tenured Associate Professor at the Department of Cancer Biology and Pharmacology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Peoria, IL, USA. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1991 and was trained as a Postdoctoral Associate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC, USA. He has conducted alcohol-related birth defect research for more than 20 years. In his laboratory, a combination of state-of-the-art approaches, including RNA interference, microRNA technology, and ultrasound-guided utero microinjection, is integrated with cell and whole embryo culture systems, as well as in vivo mouse models of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying FASD.
