Niwat Maneekarn received his D.V.M. degree with honors from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, his M.S. degree in 1974 from Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, and his Ph.D. degree, in 1985, in microbiology and immunology from the University of Illinois at Chicago, Health Science Center, Chicago, Ill, USA. From 1978 to 1990, he worked as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, and from 1990 to 2006, he worked as an Associate Professor at the same Department. Presently, he is a Professor at the same department. His areas of expertise are epidemiology, characterization of rotavirus, norovirus, sapovirus, and other diarrheal viruses, and molecular mechanisms of interferon resistance mediated by hepatitis C virus.
