Theodoor Niewold received the Ph.D. degree. He is an Immunologist/Experimental Pathobiologist. He received his Ph.D. degree at the University of Utrecht, Utrecht, the Netherlands in 1990. From 1986 to 1993, he was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Veterinary Pathology, the University of Utrecht. Between 1993 and 1996, he worked as a Visiting Scientist on invitation at the Human Immunology and Cancer program at the University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC), Knoxville, Tenn, USA. In the period from 1996 until 2005, Niewold was Senior Pathobiology Scientist at the Animal Sciences Group, the CRO (Contract Research Organization) of Wageningen University, in Lelystad, the Netherlands. Since 2005, he has been working as a Nutrition and Health Professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. From 2010 onward, he has also been the Scientific Head of the experimental farm facilities of the KU Leuven. He is (co) author of over 100 refereed publications, invited papers, book chapters, and abstracts. Niewold's current research fields are (pig) pathophysiology, mucosal immunity, innate immunity and inflammation, functional food/feed, and (intestinal) genomics.
