Eric Suba, a holder of the M.D. degree, is a graduate of Princeton University and Washington University Medical School in Saint Louis, Mo, USA. He is a Pathologist with Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco. In 1994, he founded the Viet/American Cervical Cancer Prevention Project, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization based in San Francisco, after he had learned that the Vietnam War had probably contributed to the burden of cervical cancer in Vietnam. Subsequently, the introduction of Papanicolaou cytology screening to southern Vietnam was associated with reductions in cervical cancer incidence from 29.2/100,000 in 1998 to 16.5/100,000 in 2004. Dr. Suba has documented lessons learned from successful cervical cancer prevention in Vietnam through a series of publications and has contributed to cervical cancer prevention guidelines for the World Health Organization, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, and other groups.
