Francisco Manuel Braz Fernandes

Francisco Manuel Braz Fernandes was born in Beira, Mozambique, in 1951. He received the B.E. degree from the Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon, Portugal, in 1976, the DEA degree from Paris-Sud University, Orsay, France, in 1982, the Ph.D. degree in materials science and engineering from the National Polytechnic Institute of Lorraine, Nancy, France, in 1985, and the D.S. degree in physical metallurgy from the New University of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal, in 2008, where he is an Associate Professor of the Materials Science Department. He is the Coordinator of the Structural Materials Group of CENIMAT/I3N. His main scientific interests are bulk and thin film shape memory alloys processing and characterization (structural, thermal, mechanical, and electrical) and severe plastic deformation. His teaching activities included teaching materials processing (heat treatment of metal alloys) and structural characterization (X-ray diffraction). In 2009, he was awarded the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa at the University of Galati, Galati, Romania.
