Francisco Manuel Braz Fernandes

Francisco Manuel Braz Fernandes was born in Beira, Mozambique, in 1951. He received the B.Eng. degree from the Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon, Portugal, in 1976, the D.E.A degree from Paris-Sud 11 University in 1982, the Ph.D. degree in materials science and engineering from the National Polytechnic Institute of Lorraine, Nancy, France in 1985 and the D.S. degree in physical metallurgy from the New University of Lisbon in 2008, where he is Associate Professor of the Materials Science Department. He is the coordinator of the Structural Materials Group of CENIMAT / I3N. His main scientific interests are bulk and thin film shape memory alloys processing and characterization (structural, thermal, mechanical and electrical) and severe plastic deformation. His teaching activities included teaching materials processing (heat treatment of metal alloys) and structural characterization (X-ray diffraction). In 2009 he was awarded the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Galati, Romania.
