Susumu Ito was born in Furano, Japan, in 1949. He received the Ph.D. degree from Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, in 1977. From 1977 to 2001, he served at Tochigi Research Laboratory of Kao Corporation as a Research manager, Tochigi, Japan. From 2001 to 2009, he worked at Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) as a Program Director and Project Director Yokosuka, Kanagawa, Japan, and CRIS, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan as a Professor. Since 2009 April, he works at the Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology, Faculty of Agriculture, University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa, Japan as a Professor. He served as an Editor of Extremophiles from 1997 to 2007, a Chief Editor at Journal of Applied Glycoscience from 2008 till 2010, and General Editor of the Journal of Biological Macromolecules since 2000. He received Ichimura Award (1988), Japanese Chemistry Association Award (1989), Japanese Society of Agricultural Chemistry Award (1990), Ohkouchi Memorial Award (1991), and Japanese Society of Applied Glycoscience Award (2006).
